Milking Frogs!

Performed by Michael J. Tyler
Photos by Stuart Blackman

This procedure, called 'milking frogs,' was performed by Michael J Tyler at my house and was
performed on my Eastern Dwarf Tree Frogs (litoria fallax). It is a relatively easy procedure it is done
by rubbing an bipolar electrode up and down there back, which sends 2 and a half volts through
their body which causes their muscles in the skin to tense up. While this is happening the frogs secretions
come to the surface of the skin and is then washed off into a tray with deionized water, and taking back
to the lab to be looked at.This work conforms with the Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals
for Scientific Purposes (1990) and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (1985) and was approved
by the University of Adelaide Animal Ethics Committee.
